Reductions

Reductions include discounts, exemptions and other schemes such as Disability Banding Reduction. Click on the links below for more information and how to apply.

Discounts - Council Tax discount can reduce your bill by up to 50%, although some discount types are time limited. It can relate to the person(s) resident in the property. e.g. one liable resident, or to the property itself, when it is not anyone's sole or main residence. e.g. purpose-built holiday home. In assessing residency certain categories of residents are disregarded, for example:

  • certain students, student nurses and apprentices
  • long-term patients in a hospital or a care home
  • persons in a prison
  • severely mentally impaired persons
  • certain types of care workers

Exemptions - Council Tax exemption can reduce your bill by 100%, i.e. no charge, although some exemption types are time limited. It can relate to the person(s) resident in the property, e.g. certain types of student, or to the property itself, when it is not anyone's sole or main residence, e.g. vacant and unfurnished.

Disability Banding Reduction - this link provides details of the reduction which is available if you are disabled, or a disabled person lives with you and your home has been altered to meet their needs. A reduction award will see the amount of Council Tax charged being reduced by one band.

Energy Efficiency - this scheme is under review.

Low Income - if you are on a low income, you may be entitled to Council Tax Reduction. This is calculated on the basis of your personal and financial circumstances, and it is awarded to help you pay your Council Tax. It does not cover any Water or Waste Water Charges that you may have to pay.
