Information for Volunteers
Thank you for your interest and support.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Moray is dependent on our volunteers. Volunteers manage our DofE Centres, encourage young people to participate and mentor them through their volunteering, physical and skills sections. They train and supervise them through their expedition section. Volunteers are valued role models who help young people build important skills for life and employment.
There are a wide range of support roles available. Section Mentors are vital in helping young people to have a quality DofE experience. They are often unsung heroes, offering support for volunteering, physical and skills sections. This includes sports clubs and coaches, music teachers, librarians, charity shop managers (the list is endless). If you are asked to act as a mentor or assessor and have any questions about what is required please contact the DofE Office.
Helpers can assist Centre Coordinators manage their groups or run eDofE sessions.
Our supporting charity, The Moray DofE Awards Committee will always welcome new volunteers to help manage the committee.
DofE have a good, modular training system in place to give you the knowledge and confidence you need to help young people in any of these roles.
Expedition Supervisors and Assessors
Expedition Supervisors play an important role in training young people and ensuring their safety on the expedition. Most of our expeditions take place at Bronze level, over normal country routes. To help with these expeditions you do need to be a mountaineer and we can help provide training and support to give you the confidence to help young people achieve their expedition. We recommend that volunteers new to DofE take part in the DofE Expedition Skills course.
The DofE website provides an overview of all volunteer roles.
Expedition Resource
We have several pre-planned routes for Bronze expeditions. You may find these useful when planning your own expeditions.
Support and Training
DofE Moray offer an annual Adult Summit in November. This is an opportunity for you get together with other volunteers and to feedback to us the successes and lessons from the Expedition season. It also gives us a chance to exchange ideas on how we can offer young people and volunteers a rewarding DofE experience.
As a volunteer you can request a support meeting at any time.
There is a range of training courses available, dependent on your role. We have funding available through the Moray DofE Awards Committee. Courses include:
- DofE's Foundation Training Pathway is the first step for all our volunteers. This online course provides an overview of DofE and its structure.
- DofE's Delivering the Award Pathway is the next step for volunteers running or helping to run a centre. This modular on-line course goes deeper into how the Award works and how to run a DofE Programme. The pathway also includes a facilitated group discussion.
- The Expedition Assessors and Supervisors Pathway is another on-line course with a facilitated discussion.
- DofE Expedition Skills, Hill and Moorland Leader or other NGB course (for volunteers who help with expeditions, especially expedition supervisors and assessors).
- First Aid Training.
- Child Protection, Diversity and Inclusion.
