Health & Safety at Work

General Information

The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 places legal duties on employers and other persons in control of workplaces to take the necessary steps to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees and to also safeguard members of the public and other persons who may be exposed to risks from the work activities.

The Environmental Health Section is responsible for enforcing health and safety legislation at the premises where The Moray Council is the enforcing authority and these premises include the following:

  • Retail (including tyre and exhaust fitters, and mobile vendors) and wholesale
  • Timber and builders’ merchants
  • Hotels, guest houses, caravan sites and residential care homes
  • Catering services (including restaurants, cafes and takeaways)
  • Offices
  • Hairdressers, beauticians, tanning salons, skin piercers and tattooists
  • Consumer services (including funeral directors, shoe repairers, launderettes and car washes)
  • Leisure and cultural activities (including golf courses, cinemas, bowling alleys, go karting, circuses and football stadia)
  • Pre-school nurseries, playgroups and childcare (except where carried out in domestic premises)
