Listed Building and Conservation Area FAQs

1. Is my property a Listed Building?

Should you wish to know if a property is a listed building you can e-mail development.control@moray.gov.uk or write in to Environmental Services, Development Management, The Moray Council, PO Box 6760 Elgin IV30 9BX giving the full postal address of the property you are enquiring about.

A written response will be issued within 14 days giving details of the listing and an extract from the statutory list of Listed Buildings for the property.  This service is provided free of charge.

Details about the listed building status of property can also be viewed online through the council’s website, following the link to Historic Scotland’s Listed Buildings database

2. My property is a Listed Building, are there any special requirements?

The Moray Council Listed Building & Conservation Area officer can provide advice on listed building matters.  You can e-mail development.control@moray.gov.uk or write in to Environmental Services, Development Management, The Moray Council, PO Box 6760 Elgin IV30 9BX with details of your enquiry.

Additionally you can contact Historic Scotland where a Guide for Owners and occupants is available, or by calling 0131 668 8722 

IMPORTANT NOTE: it is an offence under section 8 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997 to undertake any works, which affect the character or appearance without the necessary Listed Building Consent.  You must make sure you have obtained all necessary consents before undertaking any works to listed buildings

3. Are there any grants available for Listed Buildings/Conservation Area?

The Council no longer provides grant aid assistance for works to Listed Buildings. 

You can also contact Historic Scotland on 0131 668 8722 for information about any available grant aid assistance.

However you can contact the Private Sector Housing Section on 0300 123 4566 to enquiry what grants are available for sub standard properties or by email to housing@moray.gov.uk

4. Is my property located within a Conservation Area?

Should you wish to know if a property is in a Conservation Area you can e-mail  development.control@moray.gov.uk or write in to Environmental Services, Development Management, The Moray Council, PO Box 6760 Elgin IV30 9BX giving the full postal address of the property you are enquiring about.

A written response will be issued within 14 days to confirm whether the property is located within an Conservation Area.  Please note this service is provided free of charge.

5. My property is located within a Conservation Area, are there any special requirements?
