School Travel Plans

Moray Council encourages all schools to develop their own School Travel Plan. A School Travel Plan is a package of measures aimed at helping improve the school-run, reduce congestion and increase road safety, make schools and pupils healthier, identify main walk and cycle routes to school to make them as safe as possible, and look after our environment by reducing emissions.

A School Travel Plan is a simple written document which identifies the issues surrounding the journey that pupils make to and from school. It sets out agreed aims to overcome these issues and outlines a series of practical steps to promote sustainable travel, road safety awareness, and offers a range of learning opportunities along the way.

The School Travel Plan should link in with the schools’ wider Development or Improvement Plan. The aims of a School Travel Plan is to support various local and national policy objectives such as carbon reduction, increasing levels of physical activity, improving road safety, addressing congestion and social inclusion. It will link with Eco-Schools, Active Schools, Junior Road Safety Officer’s (JRSO)’s and Health Promoting Schools.

However, a School Travel Plan is a living document which must also address local and specific issues, be supported by a Travel Plan Group with senior management support, be kept under review by the Travel Plan Group and deliver real benefits to the users of the school and the surrounding community. School Travel Plans are created in consultation with the whole school community; an active role for the parent council is encouraged. Each School Travel Plan can be different, as each school considers its local situation and current trends, issues and solutions.
