2.  How many schools in your area provide gender-neutral toilets for pupils and/or staff.

Response 29-05-2025

1. None of our schools provide only gender-neutral toilets for pupils

15 of our schools only provide gender neutral toilets for our staff - these are single room spaces with internal wash basins accessible from communal space or corridors.

2.

Pupils Toilets:
Moray has no gender-neutral toilets for pupils in our schools, have no plans to introduce these in our schools and emphasis there is no statutory requirement to do so. Current legislation states that toilet facilities for boys and girls must be provided in schools and that schools are also required to provide accessible facilities for young people with a disability. Should legislation change then this will be reviewed, and any changes to toilet provision would be assessed and options developed and agreed, following full consultation with pupils, parents and school staff.
A number of our recent new build schools have toilet facilities designed with fully enclosed cubicles (full height and completely private) and open plan communal wash areas that can be seen from the corridor. Although these are designated based on gender they could in the future convert to unisex toilets. The cost of these modern designed toilets is commensurate and in most cases is less than traditional toilet spaces.

Staff Toilets:

Moray schools have a mix of single sex, non-gender and accessible toilets for use by staff. These are predominantly single room spaces with internal wash basins accessible from communal spaces or corridors.  Due to the variance of school size across the estate  (small rural – 1-2 staff to large secondary schools with +100 staff) and variable staff demographic over time (with some schools currently all female staff) the allocation of many of the school toilets within our primary school estate can vary over time. This will be managed by the Head Teacher. The current breakdown of toilet allocations, as defined by the Heat Teachers for their respective schools is set out below.
