FOI Request - Vaping in Schools

I am requesting the following information regarding vaping in (a) primary and (b) secondary schools in your local authority area. Please provide data for each of the last five academic years, where possible:
1.  Incidents
o  The total number of recorded incidents involving vaping (e.g., pupils caught vaping or in possession of vaping devices).
o  A breakdown of these incidents by (a) primary and (b) secondary and year.

2.  Health Concerns
o  The number of cases where vaping incidents led to health concerns or required medical attention.

3.  Disciplinary Actions
o  The total number of disciplinary actions taken against pupils for vaping.
o  A breakdown of the types of actions (e.g., detention, suspension, exclusion).

4.  Confiscated Devices
o  The total number of vaping devices confiscated.
o  Details on how confiscated devices are managed (e.g., stored, destroyed, or returned).

5.  School Policies and Interventions
o  Copies of any school policies on vaping.

Response 13-01-2025

1. We would  have to look in every pupil file to get this information. This task would cost the Council in excess of £600 of staff time. In accordance with section 12 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (excessive cost), we are therefore unable to comply with this part of the request.

2. Not held. We would suggest contacting NHS Grampian for this information. Information that is not held falls under Section 17 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 - Information not held.

3. We would  have to look in every pupil file to get this information. This task would cost the Council in excess of £600 of staff time. In accordance with section 12 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (excessive cost), we are therefore unable to comply with this part of the request.

4. Any devices found are removed and returned to the pupil at the end of the day.
