FOI Request - Winter Maintenance Salt Usage
Request 101003679012
We are currently undergoing a winter road safety study research project in various European countries. The purpose is to get a better understanding of road salt used during the winter. We have these following enquiries, regarding the roads that Moray council are primarily responsible for:
1. Does there exist any numbers of how many tonnes of salt was stocked before last winter (2023)?
2. Does there exist any numbers of how many tonnes of salt that was actually used on the roads, during last winter 2023/2024?
3. How many kilometres of road did you cover during the winter?
As the research scope is only for gritting and salting, we do not inquire for any Sand usage or Snow clearing.
Response 15-01-2025
1. Prior to the start of 2023/24 Winter Season, we had 13,320 tonnes of salt in stock.
2. During the 2023/24 Winter Season, we used 14,575 tonnes of salt
3. Not held. We do not record total kilometres carried out during all our winter maintenance operations. Information that is not held falls under Section 17 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 - Information not held.
However, we do record the kilometres of Priority 1 routes treated during the season, and this was 82,144km
