For Children and Young People

This section highlights the support available for the wellbeing of children and young people from Armed Forces families and encourages them to share their experiences.

Since its launch, the Dandelion Project has been visiting schools to listen to the voices of children and young people to better understand their views and changes they would like to see happen. The project will continue this outreach in 2024/25, ensuring that their perspectives are heard, valued and brought to the attention of those who can make the change.

This page will be updated as new opportunities arise.

Support for Mental Health and Wellbeing

Kooth is your online mental wellbeing community. This is an online platform for children and young people aged between 11-19 years of age within the Armed Forces community.

The free, safe and anonymous mental wellbeing platform allows children and young people to chat with a friendly mental health practitioner, find support from a helpful community or use a range of self-help tools.

It’s also worth noting that:

  • No GP referral is required to join Kooth – you can self refer at anytime.
  • You will be anonymous.
  • Kooth is free and there are no hidden costs.
  • Kooth is safely moderated to ensure no bullying takes place.

Little Troopers are a small charity who support all children from Armed Forces families with resources and opportunities.

They have a podcast for young people from Armed Forces families, called SQUAD. It’s the first podcast of its kind to hand the microphone over to military young people aged 13-18 and ask them to share their own views and experiences of military life. Each episode features a group of teenagers chatting about deployment, moving school, moving home, making friends and other things that are unique to forces life.

Anyone can listen to SQUAD because it’s freely available wherever you usually get your podcasts. Young people can listen to it at home or in school and there are also activity sheets.
