FOI Request - Percentage of Roads with Surface Dressing

Request 101003247196

I am involved in a series of work addressing motorcycle rider safety and the clothing worn. This brings up questions of the required abrasion resistance of garments in relation to the surfaces being ridden on.

While we have data from National Highways regarding asphalt surfacing on major routes, we also need to gather information on surface dressing used by local councils and other authorities. Please could you help with the following request?

1.  Approximately how many miles of roads is your council responsible for?

2.  Approximately what percentage of these roads have been surface dressed?

3.  Over the course of the next five years, approximately what percentage of your roads are further and additionally expected to become surface dressed?

Please note that approximate values are absolutely fine.

Response 15-03-2023

1.  1560.4 km (969.6 miles)

2.  This information is not held. I can advise that over the last 10 financial years our Annual Works Programme has contained, on average, approx. 63.8 km (39.6 miles) of surface dressing works each year. Information that is not held falls under Section 17 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 - Information not held.

3.  This information is not held. It will depend upon on how much budget we are allocated, the cost of carrying out surface dressing and the road conditions at the time of drawing up the programme. Information that is not held falls under Section 17 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 - Information not held.
