BT has written to Moray Council saying that they propose to remove a further 13 public payphones from Moray. Moray Council have been invited to respond to BT with their comments.

With this in mind, Moray Council is consulting with the people and organisations of Moray on this matter.

Our preference is that you complete the consultation online using the Survey Monkey website which can be found here.

Alternatively you can respond to the survey by emailing EHAdmin@moray.gov.uk or telephone 01343 563578 or write to EH Admin, Moray Council, High Street, Elgin, IV30 1BX. You should explain which phone box(es) you are objecting to the removal of and why. Also let us know if you are responding as an individual or on behalf of an organisation.

Please respond to the consultation by 18 September 2020.

BT has stated that they would not remove public payphones from the following areas:

  • Suicide hotspots
  • Accident hotspots
  • With no mobile phone coverage on any network
  • Within 400 metres of the coast

In addition BT has stated they won’t remove a public payphone where there is a reasonable need. They define this as having the following 3 conditions all applying:

  • The only payphone within 800 metres
  • Had at least 12 phone calls within the last year
  • More than 500 households within 1 kilometre of the payphone

There is an opportunity for community groups to "adopt" a red phone box for £1. Seven of the boxes are red.
