Consultation on BT Public Payphones

BT has written to Moray Council saying that they propose to remove 14 public payphones from Moray.

Moray Council has been invited to respond to BT with their comments. With this in mind, we are consulting with the people and organisations of Moray on this matter.

Our preference is that you complete the consultation online using the Survey Monkey website:

Alternatively you can respond to the survey by emailing or telephone 01343 563578 or write to EH Admin, Moray Council, High Street, Elgin, IV30 1BX.  You should explain which phone box(es) you are objecting to the removal of and why. Also let us know if you are responding as an individual or on behalf of an organisation.

Please respond to the consultation by 30 August 2019.

Note that there is also an option for an organisation to ‘adopt’ one of the proposed removed payphones for £1. The phonebox must be an old red phone. If it is adopted then BT would remove the phone from inside the box. Organisations elsewhere in the UK have used the old red phone as a visitor information kiosk or to hold a defibrillator.

BT has stated that they would not remove public payphones from the following areas:
- Suicide hotspots
- Accident hotspots
- With no mobile phone coverage
- Within 400 metres of the coast

In addition BT has stated they won’t remove a public payphone where there is a reasonable need. They define this as having the following three conditions all applying:

- The only payphone within 800 metres
- Had at least 12 phone calls within the last year
- More than 500 households within 1 kilometre of the payphone
