The Science of Museums - Conservation

Looking after the Objects - A little bit of Museum Science

'Behind-the-scenes'

The public areas of the museum - display cases and objects - represent just a small part of the work that goes on in the museum.

There is also a lot of 'unseen' work without which there would be no displays and objects for you to enjoy.

One important task is that of caring for the objects in the collections. This means making sure that the objects don't suffer from any harm or damage. It also means trying to repair or make good the results of any damage that they might have suffered in the past, for example before they came into the museum collections.

This area of museum work is called conservation. Use the links below to find out more about the science of museum conservation.
