Kinship Care

Kinship care is the term used when a child is cared for by a relative or close friend.

Many of these situations families arrange to suit themselves. In other situations, when it is not safe for children to remain with their parents, Social Workers will first consider if someone in the child’s extended family would be able to provide safe care.

Kinship Carers can claim child benefit and may be able to claim other benefits depending on circumstances, Citizen Advice Scotland will be able to provide detailed information.

When Social Workers place children with their family, they are required to undertake certain checks and an assessment of their ability to meet the child’s needs. They will also provide ongoing support to the carers and the children.
