Elgin – east end of High Street proposed footpath widening
We would like to invite Taxi Drivers and Operators as well as the wider public to give us their views on a possible rank location for the future which can accommodate the desire for a widened pavement. The consultation will run from 21st – 29th June 2022
Background:
As a result of the need to socially distance during the COVID-19 pandemic, measures were put in place to allow pedestrians more space on Elgin High Street at the east end between Glover Street and Lossie Wynd. This is a well-used pavement and it is one which has been identified for some time as not having enough space for 2 prams or wheelchairs to pass.
This scheme seeks to make more space for pedestrians permanently by widening the pavement to around 2.5m for the length between Lossie Wynd and the Sheriff Court. Due to the public art installations on the build outs outside the Sheriff Court there will be insufficient space adjacent to the widened pavement to allow vehicles to stop on this side of the road. It is therefore proposed to move the taxi rank permanently to the north side of High Street. This will allow taxi passengers to wait under the arches during busy periods.
The current loading bay and disabled parking spaces will remain the same. The number of spaces available for taxis will increase from 3 all day and 3 evening to 7 all day.
Feedback on this proposal would be welcomed by 5pm on Wednesday 29th June 2022.
