Newmill Flood Alleviation Scheme Phase 2
Dallas Elgin Forres Lhanbryde Rothes
Newmill Flood Alleviation Scheme Phase 2 is now operational.
Commencing in May 2016, construction was completed on time and within budget in December 2016.
The Scheme protects properties from surface water flooding from the hills to the north of the village and from the Burn of Kimminitie at Low Road.
The Scheme was in response to flooding in the village of Newmill in 2009 and consisted of two Phases:
• Phase 1 - A simple network of drainage ditches that provide protection to the east side of the village was completed in 2012.
• Phase 2 - To protect the west side of the village was more complex, consisting of a network of drainage ditches that discharge into the Burn of Kimminitie via a cascade, to the west of Back Street. It also includes flood retaining walls and embankments at Low Road and a replacement bridge to increase flow capacity beneath Low Road.
The Scheme provides protection for up to and including a flood event of 1 in 200 years plus an allowance for climate change.
Newmill FAS Phase 2 is the first Flood Alleviation Scheme to be completed under the new Flood Risk Management Strategies and Plans in Scotland’s north region.
