Food Labelling
New labelling rules including rules on Allergens came into force on 13 December 2014. These regulations bring together EU rules on general labelling and nutrition into one piece of legislation. To find out more go to our Food Labelling page.
General Information
Food Businesses must provide food that is safe, unadulterated and clearly labelled. Part of the work of the Environmental Health Service is ensuring the safety of food, at all stages of production, storage, distribution and sale until it reaches the consumer.
Environmental Health staff inspect food business premises to ensure compliance with food legislation, and to advise businesses on the hygiene, labelling and composition of food. Where contraventions of food legislation are found, officers will implement the Councils food safety enforcement responsibilities in a consistent planned and accountable manner. Environmental Health staff carry out: Inspections for Food Hygiene and Food Standards.

At a glance information about the standards of food hygiene in food businesses. For more information go to the Food Hygiene Information Scheme page.
Failing to Meet Standards
Where a business fails to meet the required food hygiene standards, an authorised officer has a range of powers to deal with non-compliance. Normally a graduated approach is taken which may range from issuing written warnings , up to the service of enforcement notices compelling improvement by a certain time, some of which can have the effect of prohibiting all or some aspects of the food business. In addition to this, an authorised officer can report breaches of the legislation to the Procurator Fiscal with a view to prosecution via the court system. Following successful prosecution, an order may be made prohibiting guilty persons from operating a food business again.
