Environmental Projects

We are involved in a number of environmental projects. Details of the environmental improvement schemes are included here.

The Wards Wildlife Site (PDF) is located in Elgin, south of the railway line, which separates Elgin from New Elgin. Alongside the Scottish Wildlife Trust, we have designated the site as a non-statutory wildlife site. The site is an important habitat, notable for its size and for supporting a colony of Northern Marsh Orchid in an urban location. The wetland provides a habitat for many wetland birds including Snipe and Reed Bunting.

A management plan has been prepared and work installing an all abilities path and interpretation material has been completed.

Biodiversity Duty Reporting

The Wildlife and Natural Environment (Scotland) Act 2011 requires public bodies in Scotland to produce a publicly available report every three years. This duty is aimed at connecting people and their environment and not about protecting specific species or sites.

The information contained within this report sets out the work Moray Council has undertaken to meet biodiversity duties from 2018 to 2020.

North East Scotland Local Biodiversity Action Plan NELBAP

We are a partner organisation on the NELBAP which aims to produce, implement and monitor action plans for a range of important habitats and species throughout the North East of Scotland. The Local Biodiversity Action Plan is designed to fit into a national and international programme designed to enhance biodiversity globally. A steering group of representatives from a range of organisations oversees the project with the support of a range of local sub-groups.
